Supervisory Committee Dr. Thomas Edward Darcie, (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) Supervisor Dr. Jens Bornemann, (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) Departmental Member Dr. Colin Bradley, (Department of Mechanical engineering) Outside Member In this thesis, novel broadband waveguides capable of operating at terahertz (THz) frequencies are introduced. We explore in detail the two-wire waveguide showing that it can have absorption as low as 0.01 cm, fairly good coupling efficiency, and is free from group-velocity dispersion (GVD). We also propose two low loss, planar slot-line structures for guiding THz waves. Rigorous theoretical analyses, numerical simulations, and experimental results are presented to evaluate and verify the performance of the waveguides at THz frequencies. We also present a tapered structure to couple effectively THz waves from a photoconductive source to a two-wire waveguide. Finally, practical structures to realize the first THz low-loss cable using the two-wire waveguide are introduced.

Negative index Clarricoats-Waldron waveguides for terahertz and far infrared applications.
We explore a class of dielectrically loaded metallic waveguides capable of supporting negative index modes in the far infrared and terahertz regime. Principles of operation, modal structure and appropriate coupling schemes are analytically and numerically investigated. The extreme simplicity of the proposed design, along with the non-conventional and counter intuitive electromagnetic properties...

We demonstrate a novel route to achieving highly efficient and strongly confined spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) waveguides at subwavelength scale enabled by planar staggered plasmonic waveguides (PSPWs). The structure of these new waveguides consists of an ultrathin metallic strip with periodic subwavelength staggered double groove arrays supported by a flexible dielectric substrate, l...
متن کاملLow-loss multimode interference couplers for terahertz waves
The terahertz (THz) frequency region of the electromagnetic spectrum is located between the traditional microwave spectrum and the optical frequencies, and offers a significant scientific and technological potential in many fields, such as in sensing, in imaging and in spectroscopy. Waveguiding in this intermediate spectral region is a major challenge. Amongst the various THz waveguides suggest...

Directional couplers are passive devices which are used as power dividers and combiners in microwave, millimeter and terahertz systems. By the use of substrate integrated waveguides (SIW) for the design of such devices, the advantages of waveguide and printed circuit (PC) technologies are utilized simultaneously, such as low cost, small size, low transmission and radiation losses. In this paper...
متن کاملGeneration of radially-polarized terahertz pulses for coupling into coaxial waveguides
Coaxial waveguides exhibit no dispersion and therefore can serve as an ideal channel for transmission of broadband THz pulses. Implementation of THz coaxial waveguide systems however requires THz beams with radially-polarized distribution. We demonstrate the launching of THz pulses into coaxial waveguides using the effect of THz pulse generation at semiconductor surfaces. We find that the radia...
